First, a Systems-Thinking Challenge:
To understand the value of AI, it’s necessary to understand your construction company as one large system comprised of many sub-systems. These systems all work together to produce results.
We’ve all heard the old adage “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. While true in theory, to produce a satisfactory “whole” we need to start with the right “parts”. For a system to produce optimal results requires not only the right sub-systems, but that each individual system functions where and how it is designed, to contribute to the overall “whole”.
Enter AI; in particular, agentic AI which functions as an integrator of the many sub-systems it touches. When properly aligned, the systems that define a construction company work in harmony to eliminate waste and increase overall efficiency. With AI integration, the interaction between those systems can be greatly accelerated, saving time and increasing profitability.
Simply stated, agentic AI, employed as an accelerator, works behind the scenes to make your company function more autonomously, freeing up more of your limited resources for strategic growth, marketing and other initiatives.
But, first thing first: Clarity!
AI depends on clear, concise information and processes to produce the best results. Systems thinking is your key to success with AI. It’s the discipline of seeing “wholes” and how all of the sub-systems are compromised when one is underperforming. And even more importantly, it’s essential to see how that one area of compromise multiplies itself throughout the entire organization. AI accelerates this process to help quickly untangle complex problems at their root.
AI Is Coming to Your Jobsite—Are You Ready?
Most of us in the construction industry are asking a lot of questions these days about the speed of technology and, in particular, the advances being made with AI. Where does it fit in? Is it something I/we should be paying more attention to? Why bother when we have an avalanche of other more important issues to deal with? But change has always been native to our noble industry, and this season of technology is no different from that of the fax, iPhone, or PC. We don’t have a choice.
AI is first, above everything else, a tool to be learned and employed. And the best place to begin is with the repetitive tasks that consume your team’s time such as lead qualification, estimating, customer communication, scheduling, meeting notes, change orders, and job-cost analysis.
Don’t try to transform your entire company overnight. Pick one frustrating, time-consuming process and ask, “Could AI help us do this faster or better?” Test it, measure the results, refine the process, and then move to the next opportunity.
The goal isn’t to replace your people. It’s to give your people better tools—tools that can free them to spend more time building relationships, solving problems, and building great homes.
AI is here to stay. The question isn’t whether you will use it, but how effectively you will use it. Now is the time to embrace it, employ it, and leverage it to your advantage, and keep in step with the competition.
